Day 1: Iceland
After what I will say was a fairly arduous (though I've had worse) day of travel I made it to the cold, dark , icy insanity that is Iceland. Since we got there around 6am I wasn't able to do a whole lot. But I did get a chance to wander the empty streets until shops opened which was family magical. Given that it was around 19* outside, and I'd been wandering for about 1.5 hours, I JUMPED at the chance to sit and have a hot cup of tea in a small shop overlooking a town square and chat with a friendly Venezuelan woman who'd married a Swede and ended up in Iceland after 10 years in DC. And then,(because I'm apparently so much fun to talk to) they gave me another free cup of tea as I left to hold me over until I got to the Blue Lagoon! HOORAY ICELAND!
After a VERY long bus ride due to a 2 way road and a bad accident a few kilometers ahead of us--we made it to the Blue Lagoon. It's natural hot spring about 20 minutes away from the airport, and yes, it's hella touristy. But, after freezing all day, and a long day of travel before with close to no sleep---the hot springs was a BRILLIANT break. After braving the 1 minute it takes to walk between the building and the water, just soaked it up. With the exception of my ears feeling like they were going to fall off due to the wind whipping over the water, it was so incredible. I think everyone should be able to jump into a natural spa right after a plane ride. Magical.
NOTE: The sun was only up from like 10:30 am til 4pm, so I made it the airport just before dark again, but sadly no northern lights (unless we're counting the fake ones they had in the Icelandair planes)
After hopping back in he plane, I headed off to London. While it was a fairly quick flight, due to baggage problems, and traffic, I wasn't able to meet my friend Miia for dinner until about 9pm. Let it be known that up to this point I had a total of 3 hours of sleep in around 30 hours, and only eaten one muffin, a banana, and orange and some gummies (priorities, people). So I have never been so excited to eat in my life.
I'll add pics when I get a chance---but for now. There's an update. You're welcome.
